VAULT'S VERDICT

In hiring new associates, Nixon Peabody values grades and the law school attended. For lateral hires, work experience and attendance at local schools are higher priorities. Personalities matter, too, as the firm wants associates who will mesh well with its friendly, respectful, and professional attorneys. Partners work closely with associates, value their input, and take time to mentor and train them even though there is no formal mentoring program. Because training primarily consists of CLE offerings, some associates say that they would like more opportunities to learn basic skills and develop more advanced skills. In contrast, laterals say that they were integrated into the firm through robust virtual training. Work quality depends on the partner giving the assignment and ranges from substantive, level-appropriate projects to junior-level tasks, and there’s no formal mechanism for distributing work evenly. Nixon Peabody’s billable requirement is 1,850 hours, with 1,900 hours needed to be bonus-eligible. Associates enjoy flexibility in where and when they work. Salaries lag behind the market standard and differ among office locations, and hours-based bonuses fall short of the going rate as well. Firm technology is innovative and adaptive, with the use of AI in full force. Wellness benefits, such as therapy sessions, a gym subsidy, dedicated in-house wellness professionals, are available, and their use is encouraged. Healthy snacks are also abundant. Pro bono work is expected, with up to 60 hours creditable as billable, and the firm offers bonuses tied to pro bono work for associates. The firm offers two counsel tracks, and both income partner and equity partner are realistic options.
