Paul Hastings looks for it all when it comes to recruiting candidates—grades, personality, work experience, diversity, and a drive to learn. Friendly, warm, and respectful, the attorneys at the firm are eager to collaborate and frequently socialize. Partners are encouraged to provide meaningful feedback on a real-time basis, and associates feel respected and that their input is valued by partners. Firm leadership is generally transparent regarding decisions, performance, and compensation. Work ebbs and flows, but the associates say the 2,000 billable hour requirement is reasonable and that work is evenly distributed. Associates are thrilled with the market salary and bonuses they receive, especially considering unlimited pro bono work can be attributed to the billable hour requirements. The firm affords opportunities to work on challenging, high-quality, substantive work that gives the attorneys early responsibility. The firm technology is innovative enough to allow for seamless remote work, but the associates wish some platforms were more updated. There are a number of programs aimed at the attorney’s wellbeing, most notably the firm’s affinity group “PH Balanced,” which brings in guest speakers and takes the lead on wellness efforts. Formal training is offered year round, but the associates find the most beneficial training comes from hands-on experience and informal mentorships. Becoming partner is realistic, with hard work and dedication, and the firm is supportive in providing exit opportunities, either to clients or in-house positions. Pro bono participation is a firm-wide commitment and associates are encouraged to take on pro bono work of interest to them. Diversity is a priority at Paul Hastings, through its recruitment efforts, affinity groups, and credit for 50 billable hours of diversity-related work.
