Our Survey Says

 VAULT'S VERDICT:

Pillsbury has expanded far beyond its California roots, but associates say the firm has not lost its California feel. Pillsbury has a global reach and an elite client base but is not snobby when it comes to hiring; while there is a profound T14 alumni presence, the firm is focused on finding well-rounded and friendly candidates. Associates appreciate the firm’s collaborative culture, which is fostered by an effective open-door policy at all levels. Many say the firm feels like family, in large part, because of its deliberately conservative recruiting practices, which lead to smaller associate classes that allow deeper connections to form. Another benefit of inviting fewer associates is the high partner-to-associate ratio that immediately gives new associates access to experienced attorneys and is maintained for years. This strategy may explain the firm’s high ratings on mentorship. Early responsibility and substantive work are other benefits, although more formal training would be welcomed. The general consensus suggests that Pillsbury’s 2,000 billable hour requirement is reasonable for BigLaw, and the firm’s practice of paying “super bonuses” for high billers at 2,200 and 2,400 hours makes associates feel valued and well compensated. Pro bono is a major point of pride for the firm, with as many as 300 hours of pro bono work credited as billable. Making partner feels like a very realistic prospect for associates willing to put in the time and the work, as evidenced by the high number of attorneys who start and end their careers at Pillsbury.
