Our Survey Says
Training & Assignments
- “Lots of opportunities to do what you want. If you have an interest in a particular area or type of work and let people know, they will make an effort to find that type of work for you.”
- “The work we did was billable, substantive, and overseen by patient attorneys who took the time to review the work and provide feedback. The firm also utilized my unique background and asked me to help prepare a couple of pro bono cases for a different office where I got to collaborate with other associates and partners and lead them through the substantive issues of the law.”
Social Opportunities
- “Due to the smaller size of our summer class, all the summer associates were very close, got to know each other really well, and still remain in touch.”
- “The social aspects were well attended, fun, and well planned. We really enjoyed those aspects of the program as summers.”
- “The firm has a summer associate committee, and two mid-level associates planned a huge variety of fun activities which were well attended by others at the firm.”
Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations
- “The summer program was really intended to get your feet wet. There were not a lot of expectations in terms of hours billed. That obviously changed once onboarded as an attorney. Business development is also an emphasis once an attorney, which was not the case as a summer associate.”
- “The firm did a great job setting expectations of what an associate's life would look like at the firm. I was able to practice in the area that I wanted to practice, and from the very beginning I was given meaningful projects.”
- “My expectations lined up pretty well. I knew I would be working longer hours on more difficult projects as a full time associate, and the attorneys we worked with didn't try to hide that from us. But I was also able to work with the practice area I was most interested in, and I had plenty of opportunities during the summer to meet with attorneys from that practice area to get more information about the type of work I would be doing there.”
Favorite Summer Events
- “Loved going to the Brewer's game as well as the cookout/party at one of the partner's houses.”
- “A city wide scavenger hunt that incorporated excursions to a variety of city landmarks, favorite restaurants/bars, and local hotspots.”
- “We attended a Mallards baseball game with the partners and associates. It was a smaller group, which made it possible to get to know all the attorneys in attendance.”
The Firm Says
We hire summer associates carefully, with the expectation that they can become partners at our firm. While the threshold is high for offers to join us as a summer associate, the vast majority of our second-year summer associates receive offers to return as entry-level associates.
Our 10-week summer program is designed to show you what the practice of law is really like and allows you to meet our people. It gives you an accurate idea of what it is like to be a Quarles lawyer. You will be given a variety of real work assignments for real clients and the opportunity to work in the practice area where your interest aligns.
An important part of your summer experience will be practical training opportunities. You'll accompany firm lawyers to hearings, depositions, closings, client meetings, or trials. This will help you get a flavor for many aspects of the practice of law and give you the chance to learn through observation and participation.
