Founded by two women in 2012 as a fully remote firm dedicated to work-life balance, Stotler Hayes Group is still making good on that promise. The culture is described as supportive and warm, with leadership dedicated to regular virtual and in-person events to ensure that attorneys remain connected to each other and an annual stipend for staff and attorneys to travel to visit colleagues and co-work. Partners are approachable and helpful, and the firm is very transparent about finances, promotions, compensation, and management-level decisions. The billable hour requirement is much lower than average, at 1,620 hours, and work assignments are based primarily on the jurisdictions in which a given associate is licensed. Base compensation reflects the low billable hour requirement, with bonuses available based on billable and non-billable hours. Work is entirely substantive, with each attorney given full autonomy over their cases, from intake to closure. The firm uses cutting-edge technology that creates a seamless work process, reflecting its status as an early adopter of fully remote work. The firm is also dedicated to wellness, with free counseling and “cover buddies” to allow for real vacation time uninterrupted by calls or emails. Training is robust and very helpful, with a two-week onboarding phase and six months to one year of work under a supervising attorney who reviews all work before stepping back into a mentoring role. Partnership criteria are transparent and achievable, and exit opportunities are good as well. The firm evaluates pro bono projects on a discretionary basis and offers its attorneys two paid volunteer days each year. The firm is also diverse and dedicated to inclusivity, with women and people of color reportedly feeling welcome and doing well here.
