VAULT'S VERDICT:
If you want to work at Sullivan & Cromwell, you need to beat out the competition with stellar grades, high intelligence, and passion. During the interview process, candidates are asked informal questions so the firm can get to know them and why they want to work at Sullivan & Cromwell. Once hired, associates receive a lot of feedback and training, but report that mentorship can be spotty unless the associate seeks out the relationship. The vast majority of assignments are substantive and meaningful, with senior attorneys providing guidance along the way. The firm also utilizes a staffing coordinator who takes into account the associate’s preferred area of interest when assigning matters. A culture of respect exists between partners and associates, and associates feel that partners are genuinely invested in teaching and providing frequent feedback. Socialization and respect are key components of day-to-day life at Sullivan & Cromwell, with lawyers enjoying firm-sponsored happy hours or lunch together in the cafeteria without any pressure to attend. Associates appreciate that the firm doesn’t have a billable hour requirement and pays market salary and bonuses. Sullivan & Cromwell provides many perks, including supporting associates who want to work remotely. The firm provides associates with all the technology they need to outfit a remote office. Wellness initiatives include exercise and nutritional support, a free gym with laundry service, and onsite meditation. The path to partnership is not transparent, but associates feel that their prospects outside the firm are plentiful with help from the firm’s career office and the alumni network. Sullivan & Cromwell is committed to diversity and pro bono, and associates feel genuinely supported by the firm.
