Sullivan & Cromwell LLP

Our Survey Says

VAULT'S VERDICT:

Sullivan & Cromwell taps associates from top U.S. and Canadian law schools. As expected, candidates present with good grades, and through organic conversation, interviewers seek to know the person behind the grades. Colleagues are friendly, welcoming, and down-to-earth. The firm sponsors get-togethers with coworkers, and associates say that they also socialize organically in common spaces. Partners are respectful and approachable, and they care about associates’ professional growth, providing helpful and constructive feedback. Associate and partner mentors take time to explain assignments and answer questions, and extensive formal training is offered at orientation and through workshops, practice group meetings, and CLE classes. Laterals report effective onboarding. Work assignments are challenging, and associates are expected to take ownership of cases, but early responsibility also comes with appropriate guidance. Centralized staffing works to distribute projects evenly, but associates also receive assignments via a free market system. Sullivan & Cromwell does not have a billable requirement. Compensation matches the prevailing BigLaw rate, with additional bonuses available to those who go above and beyond. Firm technology is adequate but not innovative; the laptops and some software programs are reported to be slow and outdated. The firm has hired a wellness expert and offers an on-site gym. Pro bono work is encouraged, with no hours limit, providing opportunities for junior associates to get valuable experience. Associates are more optimistic about being promoted to special counsel or income partner than about making equity partner, acknowledging excellent opportunities to obtain a position in-house or with the government.
