A friendly environment and fun programming inspire associates to go into the office, even though the firm supports a hybrid work arrangement. Partners regard associates as valuable investments and dedicate time and energy to support them by explaining expectations and providing feedback; Winston & Strawn wants its people to stay. Compensation always matches the market, and bonuses are tied to a 2,000-hour billable requirement, 100 hours of which can be from pro bono, opportunity and inclusion, and firm investment/citizenship work, and high billers receive additional bonuses. Associates find the hours manageable. Technology is reliable, and the firm has embraced innovation with AI. Associates say that wellness initiatives at the firm include excellent benefits, including those for parents, and attention paid to attorneys’ mental health. Junior associates receive broad formal training, and overall, associates give a positive assessment of both formal and informal mentorship. In addition to the 100 pro bono hours that can be credited to reach the bonus threshold, additional hours can push associates into higher bonus tiers. Promotion to partnership is realistic, and counsel roles are available. The firm is also supportive in helping attorneys find external opportunities, which include federal clerkships, roles in government, in-house roles at major corporations, and partnership at other firms.
