Pediatric Dentists

Work Environment

Most pediatric dentists work in private practice, either solo or as part of a group. They work a 40-hour week, with some evening and weekend hours to accommodate patients.

Pediatric dentists work in comfortable, well-lit offices, many times decorated in bright colors or child-friendly themes as a nod to their young clientele. Pediatric dental offices generally furnish an examining room with child-sized dental chairs, table, and other equipment to accommodate a child’s height.

Work can occasionally be challenging, especially when dealing with frightened children or an especially difficult patient. In these instances, pediatric dentists must stay calm and maintain a professional demeanor. Repetitive hand movements and the use of small hand-held tools add a risk of injury, including carpal tunnel syndrome, to this profession.
