High School
To prepare for this career, high school students should take classes in shop and mathematics. With the popularity of digital cameras, be sure to take computer science classes to understand how computer chips can store and download photographic images. Many camera technicians are photography enthusiasts themselves, so take courses in photography, film, and other art forms to gauge your interest. If you plan to open a repair business, take courses in business management, basic accounting, and marketing.
Postsecondary Training
Because their work is highly technical, photographic equipment technicians need specialized training, but classroom or correspondence training is relatively nonexistent. Most technicians learn from those with more experienced, by purchasing manuals, and by watching videos on YouTube and via other sources. Some camera companies offer repair classes and tutorials that will also be useful.
