Risk management professionals typically work a standard 9 to 5, Monday through Friday schedule, but may need to occasionally work at night and on weekends during busy periods. This job can be stressful because there are many risk areas to monitor and failure to identify them can result in the loss of millions of dollars. A typical day for a risk manager might involve research and analysis in his or her office; meetings with partners and members of the compliance, legal, and financial departments regarding risk management issues; and travel to meetings with executives at portfolio companies or those that are candidates for investment.
