Overall employment for top executives is expected to grow by 6 percent through 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), faster than the average. Employment of CEOs, specifically, will grow by 5 percent, about as fast as the average for all occupations. McKinsey & Company predicts strong growth for wealth management professionals in the coming years. According to its February 2025 report, the U.S. wealth management industry has "solid fundamentals in place," after several years of performance fluctuations. "Demand for its services continues to grow as Americans become wealthier and their needs become more complex--for example, because of greater reliance on personal savings for retirement rather than in prior generations and the proliferation of sophisticated financial products to maximize wealth accumulation and preservation."
Since most wealth management firms have one or only a handful of managing directors, it is extremely difficult to ascend to this top position. Wealth management professionals with extensive managerial experience, an excellent track record of generating strong investment returns for clients, and who keep the new investor pipeline flowing will have the best job prospects.
