Our Survey Says
- “The summer associate program at Arnold & Porter is a great way to figure out what practice area you would like to do. Specifically, there is no rotation program, but instead, summer associates speak to practice management about their interests and what types of assignments they want to try or experience and are provided those opportunities.”
- “Had an organized program to assign summer associates new work and receive feedback. Also had check-ins each week with recruiting staff about how busy we were, whether we needed more or less work, what new assignments we wanted, what practice areas we were interested in, and whether we were integrating well/meeting new attorneys. The assignments were substantive but not overwhelming for a summer associate. There were many shadowing opportunities to witness hearings and depositions as well.”
- “I was really impressed with the summer program assignment coordination. Work assignments were substantive and ready for summer associates upon arrival. I felt valued and appreciated the learning experience of being able to try out different practice groups.”
- “Arnold & Porter strikes the right balance between giving summer associates a realistic preview of life as an associate and not overworking summers. I was given an appropriate number of concurrent assignments and was responsible for managing my time accordingly to ensure I completed each assignment on time. After I completed each assignment, senior attorneys (even senior partners who chaired their respective practice groups) were extremely generous in giving me thoughtful feedback.”
- “Attorneys really showed up for the summer events and made an effort to make us all feel welcome. Our summer class especially got along well, and participation at events was high. My favorite summer event was pickleball with the class!”
- “The social events were well-thought out and geared towards building connections with the summer associate class and attorneys in the firm. Favorite events included a pizza-making class, an Alicia Keys concert, and a Mets Game in box seats.”
- “The tour of the U.S. Capitol with Senator Chris Dodd was a wonderful experience and easily one of the most memorable parts of my summer program. Overall, I developed a lot of great friendships and connections with my summer classmates.”
- “The firm hosted events for the summers such as going to see a show on Broadway and going to mini golf and also included many events during the workday to meet the attorneys and develop camaraderie among the summers.”
- “I have been pleasantly surprised with the variety of my assignments as well as the ability to voice my opinion on the type of work I want. There is obviously less social time than over the summer, and participation at firm-wide events is slower during the year than in the summer, but I think that is typical in the hybrid environment.”
- “One thing I did not realize about the firm as a summer associate is the extent to which the firm follows the free market assignment system. Upon officially starting as a first-year associate, I found it rather challenging to discuss new work opportunities with practice managers.”
- “I think there has been slightly less ability to choose which cases we would like to be a part of, but that's just the nature of the beast. I have been able to steer my career path and which cases I am working on by networking within the firm, which also differs significantly from what I was told. The firm put a pretty big emphasis on the practice managers during the summer program, and while they do help significantly if I need more work, I really think it's easier and more common to ask attorneys with whom I have a good relationship for work.”
- “The people are even kinder and more helpful and more willing to mentor.”
