Our Survey Says
Training & Assignments
- “My time as a summer associate prepared me well for my practice as an actual attorney at [Arnold & Porter]. I was given work that was meaningful and helped me understand the expectations for what kind of work product I'd be expected to deliver as a full-time associate. I was also able to sample different practice groups and had a good idea of what kind of work I wanted to focus on once I joined the firm.”
- “Fantastic work available basically from any firm office and in any practice area you're interested in. They want you to experiment with different practice areas and gauge your interest. There was an excellent combination of formal and informal assignment systems. I received very substantive work and also had access to high-profile pro bono matters even as a summer associate.”
- “The firm offered a great mentorship program with a junior associate and a partner who checked in weekly to see how we were doing. The assignments were challenging yet substantive.”
Social Opportunities
- “We were the last summer class to be in-person before the pandemic, so I'm extremely fortunate in hindsight to have had that opportunity. I loved the social events we had that summer—they ran the gamut from Soul Cycle, to bounce houses, to wine-tasting trips and other fun events. It gave me multiple opportunities to develop strong relationships with different attorneys and my office and to forge close bonds with my fellow summers.”
- “We had great events (Broadway shows, concerts, shoe customizations, etc.) seemingly a couple of times a week that were always well attended by the firm. Lunches with firm attorneys and partners were also highly encouraged.”
- “Our summer program was virtual, so we did not have as many social events as in past summers. That being said, I appreciated the creativity and effort of our legal recruiting/summer associate team to come up with different and enjoyable events.”
Associate Experience vs. Summer Expectations
- “The workload certainly increased, but it is always manageable and the partners are very understanding and sensitive about competing assignments. I also have worked on much more substantive assignments rather than research memos since I began practicing at the firm.”
- “The summer associate program really did prepare me for my work as an associate now. The pro of that set up is that I did know what I was getting into; the con of that set up is that the summer program was pretty intense work-wise.”
- “My experience practicing has matched what I was told as a summer associate. I'm doing similar work, just more of it. I was pleasantly surprised by the ramp-up period they gave us—the first few months, they took it really easy on first years, which was super helpful in getting adjusted to firm life.”
Favorite Summer Events
- “Ariana Grande concert at MSG, To Kill a Mockingbird on Broadway, and Milk Bar cake-making class.”
- “Karaoke and when a former senator (and now partner) gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the Capitol building in Washington, D.C.”
- “My favorite summer events were the paint night and the cooking night where multiple firm attorneys taught their own recipes.”
