About Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP
Arnold & Porter is home to more than 1,000 lawyers across 15 offices around the globe. The firm practices in more than 40 areas and is particularly well-known for its antitrust and appellate, environmental, and securities litigation practices, as well as its cross-border work.
Let’s Get Together
The Washington, DC, giant firm Arnold & Porter joined New York’s Kaye Scholer in 2017, creating Arnold & Porter Kaye Scholer LLP. The merger combined the best of both worlds—a DC firm known for its top-ranked practices, including antitrust, regulatory, and litigation, and a New York firm recognized by Vault and others for its stellar associate quality of life.
Top-Notch
Today, Arnold & Porter continues its top-notch antitrust work, handling a full range of complex and critical antitrust matters, including transactions, government investigations, cartel matters, strategic counseling, and class action litigation. The firm’s lawyers have helped clients obtain antitrust clearance for some of the largest M&A deals, including Kroger in its $2.5 billion merger with Harris Teeter; General Electric in the $32 billion combination of GE Oil & Gas with Baker Hughes; and AT&T in its $49 billion acquisition of DIRECTV. The firm also has a strong antitrust litigation practice with successes that include defending the Golden State Warriors in an antitrust suit brought by StubHub and defending HarperCollins and Random House in multiple private retailer litigations following government investigations into the sale of e-books. Unsurprisingly, Arnold & Porter holds the No. 11 spot in Vault’s Antitrust practice area ranking.
Arnold & Porter also boasts a strong environmental law practice—the firm is primary environmental counsel to BP with regard to the Deepwater Horizon Gulf of Mexico Oil spill. The firm handles litigation, regulatory, and transactional matters in a range of areas including air quality, contaminated sites, infrastructure, toxic torts, and natural resource damages. Arnold & Porter is one of eight founding firms of Lawyers for a Sustainable Economy through which the firm has pledged to dedicate at least $2 million worth of pro bono work to matters involving sustainability by the end of 2020.
Recognized for its M&A work, Arnold & Porter advises clients through all aspects of the acquisition, including structuring transactions, negotiating, handling regulatory issues, and integrating after the fact. Clients also call upon the firm for its capital markets experience—the firm works on everything from IPOs, PIPE transactions, and Rule 144A to shelf offerings, as well as global offerings such as Regulation S offerings and Eurobond. In both its M&A and capital markets work, the firm stays attuned to regulatory issues that may arise.
Twilight Gardening
One of Arnold & Porter’s traditions is a “garden room” within each office. The firm hosts gatherings once per week at the close of the business day where lawyers can gather for drinks and snacks.
COVID-19 Update
We understand the pandemic has affected everyone in myriad ways. While we are all more adept at engaging virtually, we are still approaching the upcoming recruiting season with flexibility and understanding. We are planning to conduct callback interviews virtually and hope to engage with students in person in the fall should the opportunity arise. We are excited to meet the next generation of talented lawyers.
News & Awards
- The Supreme Court's decision in Gideon v. Wainwright in 1963 affirmed the principle that every person charged with a serious criminal offense is constitutionally entitled to the assistance of a lawyer, and if he cannot afford counsel, the state has a duty to furnish him with an attorney. Arguing the right to counsel was Abe Fortas, when the firm was called Arnold Fortas & Porter.
- The Pennsylvania Supreme Court ruled in favor of Arnold & Porter's pro bono clients in the gerrymandering lawsuit, League of Women Voters of Pennsylvania v. Commonwealth.
- Arnold & Porter obtained a resounding victory for Planned Parenthood on all claims in a case against activists that embarked on a years-long campaign to shut down Planned Parenthood. The jury of nine men and one woman awarded Planned Parenthood both compensatory and punitive damages totaling more than $2 million.
