VAULT'S VERDICT:
One of several elite law firms with the same first name, BakerHostetler should not be mistaken for the others. The firm has built its reputation in United States-only offices by doing amazing work with some amazing clients. It recruits associates not only from top law schools, but also top performers from mid-tier regional schools with prior work or clerkship experience. Personality, work ethic, and the ability to be a team player are important, too, as the firm wants people who work well together and who don’t mind socializing with coworkers. Partners value associates and their opinions, and are approachable for questions. They also do an admirable job making lateral hires feel like part of the team. Formal training is strong, and new hires benefit as well from partners and senior associates who assist with substantive legal matters and general orientation to the practice of law. BakerHostetler associates are given challenging assignments, which are dispensed fairly and according to availability and interest. While there is no official billable-hour requirement, associates must hit a reasonable 1,950 hours to be bonus-eligible. And work-life balance is important. Associates are paid well, though perhaps not at the top of the market. Better efforts could be made so that associates utilize wellness initiatives; on the other hand, BakerHostetler prioritizes pro bono work—there is no cap on hours counting toward billable credit. Technology is a firm highlight, with a team—IncuBaker—devoted to implementing the newest innovations. Diversity efforts have been good in terms of hiring, promotion, and programming. Associates like their chances of moving up to partner or counsel, and prospects for in-house, government, or other law firm positions are outstanding.
