VAULT'S VERDICT:
BakerHostetler is a great landing spot for associates looking for exemplary work environments, career prospects, and pro bono opportunities. In addition to students with top grades from elite law schools, it recruits heavily in regions near its offices and looks for high-performing candidates with work experience. Socializing and collaboration come easily in the relaxed, collegial office settings of BakerHostetler. Partners value associates and the work they do, and they do an exceptional job mentoring, guiding, and providing feedback to associates. Associate professional development is taken seriously and augmented by substantive practice area trainings. BakerHostetler goes the extra mile in welcoming lateral hires and sets them up with work immediately. Generally, work assignments consist of a solid combination of elementary tasks and high-level, thought-provoking projects, all of which are allocated fairly and on the basis of attorney availability and experience. Associates must bill 1,950 hours to be eligible for bonuses, which can bring total compensation closer to the market rate. Job stability and work-life balance, however, make up for the below-market compensation. Associates appreciate both firm technology, including the quality Help Desk team, and the firm’s innovation efforts, which include an in-house group dedicated to leveraging technology. A nice range of wellness initiatives helps attorneys with mental health, physical health, and nutrition concerns. Recently, pro bono efforts have expanded, and hours spent doing pro bono work count as uncapped billables. Associates recognize that the firm has worked to address diversity issues by establishing affinity groups, hosting events, and hiring, retention, and promotion efforts. Associates report that partnership prospects are realistic, counsel roles are available and often serve as stepping stones to partner, and that exit opportunities are strong if desired.
