Bookoff McAndrews is a DC-based patent law firm focused on non-litigation patent services—including patent counseling and prosecution—for technology companies. In just a handful of years since it first opened its doors, BoMc has grown to more than 35 attorneys, attracted scores of high-technology startups and Fortune 500 companies as clients, and attained nationwide recognition typically reserved for much more established, larger firms. 

Making Its Mark in DC 

The firm was founded by former Finnegan partners Les Bookoff and Roland McAndrews in 2012 to focus on "everything patents that's outside the courtroom" to cut down on the overhead costs associated with maintaining an in-house litigation practice and provide clients with more certainty as to staffing on their matters. The firm opened a small office on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, DC, and within months, BoMc (as the firm would soon be called) outgrew its space. Since then, six other partners have joined Les and Roland at the helm—Chris Agrawal, Kirsten Johnson, Dinesh Melwani, Jameson Ma, Elizabeth Shah, and Jessica Winchester—and the firm has grown to the nationally recognized name that it is today.

Patent Everything

BoMc is wholly focused on everything patent—from patent prosecution to patent disputes to IP transactions to counseling on patent issues. The firm is a trusted advisor to clients in analyzing patents, evaluating patent enforceability, and assessing competitors. Lawyers at BoMc also monitor clients’ patent portfolios. The firm has been recognized by such publications as Chambers USA and IAM Patent 1000 and has also been on Forbes’ “Legal Black Book” list for Top IP Firms in the U.S.

Embracing Balance

Some firms tout their commitment to work-life balance, but BoMc actually embraces it. Partners are invested in associate well-being, and associates, and associates are encouraged to turn down work if they’re overloaded. The firm is proud of its lawyers’ talents outside of billables, sharing that the firm is home to 19 musicians, 7 green thumbs, and 7 marathoners, and that collectively, the team speaks 15 languages.

We offer ample flexibility in working options. Based on their daily needs, team members can choose to work from their home or the office. There are no mandated office days and no penalties for working remotely. Outside of providing resources to our team members, one crucial way we support them in an inclusive and equitable manner is by giving them back their time. Through reduced hours options (e.g., the ability to work at 90 percent, 80 percent, or 70 percent of your normal workload) and flexible scheduling (i.e., the ability to largely dictate your own schedule to fit your personal and familial needs), BoMc has strived to thoughtfully cater to its team.
