VAULT'S VERDICT:

Fenwick recruits associates from top law schools, but associates from lower-ranked schools who would fit into the culture are considered. Coworkers are collaborative and professional, and socializing is common in the office, at lunch, and during firm-sponsored events. To maintain work-life balance, however, attorneys do not get together extensively outside the office. Lean teams and a free market system mean that associates and partners frequently interact and work closely together. Formal trainings are offered monthly, at a retreat held annually, and through Fenwick University every few years. Associates also learn through partners and other mentors, who care about associate development and provide hands-on guidance. Firm efforts and resources ensure that laterals are onboarded effectively. Work assignments are appropriately challenging and complex, and associates receive opportunities to push themselves on leanly staffed teams. Fenwick sets a billable requirement of 1,950 hours, and compensation matches the market rate. Bonuses are not prorated; an attorney must hit the billable goal to earn a bonus. The firm provides cutting-edge technological tools that contribute to work efficiency in the hybrid system. It is difficult for associates to find time to utilize firm wellness offerings, which include counseling services, fitness programs, and app memberships. Pro bono work is encouraged and publicized, with firm discretion to approve more than 100 creditable hours per year. Counsel roles and equity partnership positions are attainable, and the firm supports associates seeking external moves, particularly roles in-house with clients.
