Our pro bono work is varied and diverse. More than 40 percent of our lawyers are actively engaged in pro bono activities. We credit 100 hours a year toward their billable hour goal. Additional hours are rewarded and credited toward merit bonuses. The firm provides pro bono support to many organizations and programs.

A Culture of Diversity and Inclusion

Our success and growth are proof of the benefits of a collaborative culture that supports a range of initiatives to attract diverse talent. Our strategy of enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion includes, but is not limited to, internal and external initiatives that focus on recruiting, retention, a supportive infrastructure, professional association involvement, and community relations. Examples of our efforts include:
- The Finnegan Diversity Scholarship awards $15,000 per year for tuition and law school fees, as well as an offer to join the firm’s summer associate program. Since 2003, over $500,000 has been awarded to students.
- Finnegan offers billable hour credit for active participation in DEI-related activities.
- Finnegan is a proud signatory of the Mansfield Rule 4.0. We have pledged that at least 30% of candidates for leadership or governance positions, including lateral hires and equity partner promotions, will be women, minorities, and LGBTQ attorneys.
- Finnegan’s women partners launched Finnegan FORWARD, an initiative with three objectives: establish business initiatives for women attorneys; increase internal and external networks for women attorneys; and provide career advancement and business development training programs tailored specifically to women.
- Finnegan actively participates in several external initiatives targeting retention, professional and business development, and promotion of our women, minorities, and LGBTQ colleagues including Charting Your Own Course (CLOC) and the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity (LCLD) Fellow and Pathfinder external development programs for minority attorneys.
- For more than 25 years, Finnegan has hosted an International Guest Program that has welcomed more than 200 professionals from around the world to work at the firm on a temporary basis and learn about intellectual property law in the US.
- The firm offers part-time options which provide attorneys (regardless of gender or parenthood status) with a continued path to partnership at the firm while working a reduced schedule.
- Affinity Groups: Members of these groups have collaborated informally to support, mentor, and celebrate each other, as well as help to further the firm’s diversity and inclusion efforts.
