Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

When you choose to work at Goodwin, you join a work environment that fosters a sense of belonging for everyone. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) are core values embedded in our approach to the business and practice of law, evidenced in the initiatives we create and in the workplace environment we cultivate:

  • Nurturing Inclusive Communities — From recruiting, to onboarding, to performance reviews, we synthesize inclusive leadership training into the day-to-day operations of our firm. DEI and legal practice group leaders work closely to curate a focused DEI strategy that is specific to each team while advancing firmwide DEI goals.
  • Strengthening Accountability — In December 2021, we partnered with and launched AllVoices – a platform where employees and partners can anonymously ask questions, voice concerns around topics such as inclusion, workplace respect and company culture, report microaggressions, and provide feedback or communicate directly with our DEI and HR Talent teams.
  • Advocating for Social Justice — Our firm proudly provides pro bono legal assistance to those who need it most, from our business lawyers serving entrepreneurs and small businesses in historically excluded communities through our firm-founded Neighborhood Business Initiative, to supporting a diverse array of nonprofit organizations that conduct social justice advocacy, such as the Law Firm Anti-Racism Alliance and the Last Prisoner Project. The firm’s docket is also full of asylum and naturalization cases and clinics, including VAWA. One of our most popular social justice initiatives is the Transgender Name Change Project, in partnership with GLAD.
  • Incentivizing Efforts —In April 2021, we implemented a new strategic initiative that gives billable credit to associates, counsel and professional track attorneys for time spent on DEI efforts that will count toward their bonus allocation.

Diversity Fellowships

Goodwin’s 1L Diversity Fellowship Program provides first-year law students from historically excluded groups with the opportunity to be a 1L summer associate in Goodwin’s 10-week summer associate program, following their first year of law school. Candidates will spend six weeks working for Goodwin and have the opportunity to spend the remaining four weeks working at the direction of a Goodwin client. 1L Fellows will also be invited to participate in the Leadership Council on Legal Diversity’s 1L Scholars Summit. Each 1L Diversity Fellow is eligible to earn an offer to return to Goodwin for their 2L summer and to receive additional scholarship funds.

Goodwin’s 2L Diversity Fellowship program provides rising second-year law students from historically excluded groups the opportunity to earn a position in Goodwin’s Summer Associate program, in addition to receiving an award of $30,000. Finalists will take part in interviews with Goodwin lawyers, followed by virtual roundtable program involving thought exercises, discussions and social networking with key firm leaders, members of Goodwin’s Committee on Racial and Ethnic Diversity (CRED@Goodwin) and Pride@Goodwin affinity groups, as well as local office leaders.
