About Groom Law Group, Chartered
Based in Washington, DC, Groom is home to more than 85 attorneys. Founded in the wake of the passage of ERISA, the firm focuses on employee benefits, health, and retirement matters.
Forward from Ford
When President Ford signed ERISA in 1974, few law firms were prepared to meet the new demand for representation, but Groom founder Ted Groom had already been actively involved getting ERISA through the legislative process. To this day, many of the firm's lawyers have had extensive prior careers as federal regulators or Capitol Hill staff, including having held positions in the Labor Department, Treasury Department, the IRS, or the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation, as well as having served as ERISA counsel to the Senate Committee on Labor and Human Resources and as Tax Counsel to the House Committee on Ways and Means.
Today, Groom Law continues to be closely tapped in to the sources of U.S. employee benefits, retirement, and health laws. A variety of practice groups guide clients through what the firm calls the "Byzantine regulatory framework" of employee benefits, retirement, and health laws, including issues such as public and multiemployer plans, benefits-related policies, executive compensation, tax issues, pension plans, health care issues, health insurance regulation, fiduciary, plan investment issues, advocacy, and ERISA litigation.
The Benefits of Benefits Savvy
With all that collective experience under its belt, it's no wonder Groom's legal team has had the privilege of assisting blue chip companies with employee benefits, health, and retirement issues across a variety of industries. The firm's client roster has included the NFL Players Association, Campbell Soup Company, CBS, ConocoPhillips, Dow Chemical, CIGNA, ING, UnitedHealth Group, Blue Cross & Blue Shield Association, New York Life Insurance, and many, many others.
COVID-19 Update
At Groom, we have successfully navigated the remote recruiting challenges due to COVID-19. While hosting virtual interviews and meetings, we understand the flexibility everyone should have while working remotely in light of the pandemic. Our 2020 Summer Associate Program was hosted virtually and we made it our mission to make sure our newest colleagues had what they needed to feel comfortable working remotely. We provided mentors and check-ins to understand their work interests, delivered helpful technology resources, and enjoyed virtual games and events together as a team. We’ve also had the opportunity to participate in virtual OCI events through different online platforms and interact with a variety of law schools. As we work remotely, this flexibility can open the door to new opportunities and candidates. We always welcome qualified job seekers to visit our website’s ‘Careers’ page to see which openings at Groom may align with their interests.
