VAULT'S VERDICT:
Though Loeb & Loeb’s foundation was laid in the entertainment industry in California, it has expanded in both practice areas and in geography over the last 113 years. The hiring process focuses less on law school attended, grades, and journal experience, and more on hard workers with strong legal skills and prior work experience. Within the casual, collegial setting of the firm, employees care about and respect each other. Partners go the extra mile to collaborate with and treat associates as equals, and are invested in their skill development and overall well-being. Lateral hires appreciate the firm’s onboarding process, even though official training for all new attorneys is unimpressive. On the other hand, associate and partner mentors step up to provide excellent tutelage. Loeb & Loeb does not have a strict billable requirement, but associates must hit 1,900 hours a year—including pro bono work and administrative responsibilities—in order to be bonus eligible. For this reasonable billable target, associates are compensated below market both for salary and bonuses. Associates experience challenging and cutting-edge assignments, which are dispensed based on their experience level and availability. Firm technology is satisfactory, though adoption of new programs creates some problems. Loeb & Loeb offers various wellness programs, but associates feel more could be done. Pro bono opportunities and involvement are strongly encouraged, with no limit on the number of hours that count as billable. The firm is committed to diversity and social responsibility, with many programs, committees, and affinity groups, and a good parental leave program. Within the firm, associates have quality prospects for making partner or being promoted to counsel, as well as opportunities for moving to government or in-house positions.
