VAULT'S VERDICT:

Intelligence, hard work, and being a team player are cornerstones to getting a position at Ropes & Gray. Once at the firm, associates appreciate firm leadership espouses an open-door policy and regular, ongoing feedback on assignments. Training at Ropes is top-notch, with formal training programs throughout an associate’s career, and informal training and mentorship within specific practice areas. The culture at the firm is a major plus, with frequent social events sponsored by the firm and the various affinity groups. Associates like the central staffing system and feel the 1,900 billable hour requirement is manageable, especially given that unlimited pro bono hours and some diversity activities are counted towards the goal. Compensation is at market, and bonuses are not all or nothing at Ropes, which eases associates’ stress due to the natural ebb and flow of work. The firm is transparent in the path to partnership and in firm decision-making. Associates appreciate the number of opportunities to either stay with the firm long term or to the many excellent exit opportunities with clients, the government, or other firms. Firm technology is improving, and associates feel supported in when and how they work. Wellness benefits are plentiful, with access to counseling services, healthy food options, and many benefits for associates looking to start a family, to name a few. Pro bono work isn’t just valued—it’s expected. Associates are encouraged to log at least 20 hours a year on pro bono work, but many associates spend a lot more time on important social matters. Diversity is improving at the firm, and efforts toward recruitment, retention, and promotion of diverse attorneys are notable.
