Our Survey Says

 VAULT’S VERDICT:

As one of the most prestigious law firms, Skadden offers many exceptional features that make it a great place to work. Recruiting is selective, yet social skills are almost as important as top grades. Office settings are inclusive and respectful of attorneys’ lives outside of work, and everyone gets along. Partners are approachable and helpful, and they are keen on providing development opportunities and feedback to associates. Formal and informal mentor relationships, overall, are supportive and beneficial, as are the firm’s more formal training programs. Lateral hires feel welcome and assimilate nicely. Associates get challenging work assignments and experience significant client face time, and they are pushed to take on additional projects that challenge them. Availability and experience often determine how work is distributed, which associates think is a fairly balanced system. Skadden imposes a manageable 1,800-hour billable requirement, which includes unlimited pro bono work. This policy makes sense because pro bono work is strongly encouraged and supported. Compensation matches market rates, and bonuses are attainable given the moderate billable target. Firm technology is not the greatest, as many programs are slow and/or outdated. Fortunately, improvements have been made, and new programs are being implemented. Skadden is ambitious with wellness efforts, which include access to counseling and coaching, an in-house gym, and events that promote holistic well-being. The firm is also invested in diversity, equity and inclusion efforts, which include affinity groups, intentional hiring, and targeted events. Promotion to equity partner is possible but takes a lot of time and dedication. The firm’s reputation means attorneys enjoy promising external options in-house or with the government.
