Attorneys and staff are social, engaging at a mix of firm-sponsored social events and informal gatherings. Partners maintain an open door policy and receive associate feedback, which is collected through a formal process of confidential upward reviews. They also invest in associate development, often assigning junior attorneys stretch tasks accompanied by clear instructions and reviewed with feedback. Every attorney is assigned a partner and associate mentor when they join the firm, and the firm outlines the skills expected at different career stages through a published set of associate development goals. Work is assigned through a central staffing office that accounts for each associate’s workload and distributes assignments evenly among them. Every attorney is also expected to complete at least 50 hours of pro bono work per year, which Weil incentivizes with a firmwide competition. The firm also offers fitness competitions and a fitness stipend, and it supports a partner committee on wellness and associate wellness ambassadors. The firm pays market compensation and sets no billable hour requirement for a bonus. Summer associates appreciate the firm’s generous salary advances. The partnership process is challenging and competitive, but realistic. After reaching counsel, attorneys have three years to make partner or are supported in transitioning out. Exit opportunities include roles at peer firms, boutique law firms, and in-house opportunities with clients.
