Books and periodicals such as Financial Risk Management For Dummies, by Aaron Brown; Hedge Funds For Dummies, by Ann C. Logue; and The RMA Journal (https://www.rmahq.org/the-rma-journal) will help you to learn more about risk management practices and the world of hedge funds. Once you’ve checked out these resources, think about how you could apply risk management principles to the management of the finances and overall operation of a school club or other organization.
If you’re in college, see if your school has a risk management club. Also, consider competing in the Spencer Educational Foundation's Student Risk Management Challenge (https://www.spencered.org/risk-management-challenge), a competition for college students in the U.S. and Canada that will help you to develop your risk management skills.
Participate in information interviews with risk managers. In such an interview—which can be conducted in-person, on the phone, or through video-conferencing technology—you will get the opportunity to ask risk managers about their job duties, work environment, likes and dislikes about their careers, educational training, and other topics that will help you to learn more about the field. Ask your school counselor or a teacher to help you set up information interviews.
