Your questions answered.
Do I have to paint? No. You’ll manage sales, operations, and hire painters to paint. Students from all majors gain valuable life and business experience through the program.
What if I’ve never painted a house before? We’ve been rocking this business model for 30 years. The secret to our success is our training and your dedication. Before summer, you’ll receive extensive training and hands-on experience. You’ll also have a district manager supporting you throughout the program.
How will I find enough work? Ten percent of all homes are painted each year. After your training, you’ll create a marketing plan with help from your district manager. We provide marketing tools like flyers, lawn signs, and door hangers. By starting in the spring, you can book half your summer jobs before summer begins.
How will I get equipment? You’ll use our College Works line of credit with a national supplier. You’ll start with a set amount of equipment based on your sales volume. Revenue from completed jobs will cover these costs.
How many houses will I be responsible for? On average, you’ll manage 15-20 homes over the summer. However, you can take on as many as you can manage.
How will I get paid? The spring training program teaches you how to accurately price painting jobs, understand costs for supplies and materials, and calculate your commissions. Interns are paid based on completed estimates and can earn bonuses for meeting goals. Typically, a summer painting job costs around $6,000, and by effectively managing expenses and crew using our processes, you can earn an average 18% commission.
How do I find employees? Most managers post job ads and conduct interviews within their territory. You can hire individuals with past painting experience or even your peers. All painters must be 18 or older and are paid an hourly wage with bonuses for completing jobs ahead of schedule.
How do I know I can succeed? Success ultimately depends on you. College Works provides comprehensive training, financial backing, equipment, support, and access to our extensive knowledge and track record. What we can’t provide is your self-motivation. You must dedicate your Spring Break, evenings, and weekends to setting up your summer jobs. During the summer, you’ll start early, work late, and make sacrifices. Only you can decide if you’re ready for this commitment.
How do I learn more about former interns’ professional careers after the program? We’re incredibly proud of our alums and their achievements. Many have gone on to work for successful companies like Google, Amazon, Facebook, Deloitte, Boeing, Goldman Sachs, and SpaceX or own and run large companies. Make sure to read their inspiring success stories at alumni.collegeworks.com.
Why choose College Works over other internships? Most internships offer limited responsibility and low pay. At College Works, you’ll lead a team, run a business, and gain real-world experience. These skills in leadership, stress management, and work discipline will benefit any career path.
