About Perkins Coie LLP

Although its largest office is still in Seattle, Perkins Coie has expanded to include 17 domestic offices—4 of which are in California—and 5 international offices. Firm clients include household names such as Microsoft, Meta, Starbucks, Amazon, and Google.

From Birth to Boeing

Perkins Coie got off to a good start. Founded in 1912, the firm’s earliest clients included William E. Boeing, Sr., founder of the eponymous aeronautics company. The relationship with Boeing contributed to Perkins Coie’s reputation for representing high-tech and cutting-edge ventures in Seattle, which has become one of the nation’s technology hotspots. Today, the firm has more than 1,000 lawyers working across many industries, including aerospace and transportation, energy and natural resources, financial services and investments, life sciences and healthcare, retail and consumer products, technology, and communications.

A Bit of Everything

Perkins Coie is a full-service firm with a range of practices. Business practices include emerging companies, M&A, and corporate governance and securities; litigation practices range from privacy and data security to whitecollar investigations and defense; and its intellectual property practice is focused on patent prosecution, patent litigation, trade secrets, and trademarks. Other significant practices include labor and employment, product liability, business litigation, antitrust, insurance recovery, and securities litigation practices, as well as financial transactions, financial regulations, technology transactions and privacy, environmental law, real estate, and trust and estate planning.

Perkins Coie has also earned a reputation as a go-to firm for tech startups over the past few decades, and the firm boasts a number of innovative services itself. The firm’s StartupPercolator is an interactive website that provides entrepreneurs resources and guidance on aspects of company formation such as crafting a business plan and choosing a legal structure.

A Writer’s Life

Perkins Coie is a shop filled with lawyers who know how to put pen to paper. The firm publishes 11 blogs, and each one focuses on legal topics in a specific industry or practice, including virtual currency, privacy and data security, asset management, and white collar law. The firm has also been recognized for its command of the written word; as of 2024, Perkins Coie lawyers are 10-time recipients of the Burton Award, which commends the top authors of articles submitted by the nation’s largest law firms.
