About Benesch, Friedlander, Coplan & Aronoff LLP

Founded in 1938, Benesch is one of Cleveland's most notable law firms. The firm has been recognized for its corporate, health care, and real estate work.

Midwest Roots and Worldwide Growth

Cleveland attorneys Alfred Benesch, Jerome Friedlander, and I. Robert Morris founded the firm nearly 80 years ago at the tail end of the Depression. Benesch, a prominent player in Cleveland's political arena, had served as judge of Cleveland's police court, a city council member, and State Director of Commerce. He was also heavily involved in area schools as a member of Cleveland's board of education—a local elementary school was eventually named after him. Robert Coplan joined the firm after serving as a naval aviator during World War II and built up the firm's tax practice. In 1958, George Aronoff joined the firm; he took over the practice from Coplan in the 1970s.

In more recent decades, Benesch, has pursued a strategy of steady growth from its Midwest base. In 2007, the firm expanded to the East Coast, opening offices in Pennsylvania and Delaware. Three years later in 2010, the firm opened a new office in New York and merged with Indianapolis firm Dann Pecar Newman & Kleiman. According to firm leadership, the move was meant to boost core practices like real estate, litigation, business reorganization, transportation, and construction. In 2015, Benesch opened a Chicago office with new hires from Ulmer & Berne’s litigation practice.

From Corporate to Real Estate

Benesch’s core practice areas include corporate & securities, healthcare, information technology, IP, labor & employment, litigation, real estate, and environmental law. The firm counsels clients across more than 20 industries.

Among its strong practices include the firm’s corporate & securities practice. Benesch attorneys counsel clients in a host of areas, such as corporate governance, fund formation, joint ventures, M&A, private equity, and securities—to name some.

The firm’s real estate attorneys work on construction-related issues, environmental law, leasing, mortgage financing, purchase and sale, tax matters, and zoning. Its clients include both buyers and sellers, developers, landlords and tenants, and lenders and borrowers. Firm lawyers assist step up when clients need assistance with transactional matters or litigations but also provide counsel on regulatory and compliance matters.

Got Your Back

Benesch attorneys don’t go it alone when it comes to navigating their development. New attorneys are provided benchmarks from the start to help them understand what is expected of them. They also participate in an onboarding program over a six-month period. On top of these measures, the firm has also identified five success factors that attorneys should strive to reach and offer training to reach these through Benesch University.
