The Occupational Outlook Handbook predicts that employment of meeting, convention, and event planners (the career field it covers that is closest to fashion coordinators), will grow faster than the average for all careers from 2023 through 2033. The outlook for fashion coordinators will not be as strong as it is for planners, because fashion coordination is a small field that is difficult to enter. Some opportunities will occur as a result of the creation of new positions in the field or current employees retiring or leaving the workforce for other reasons. Most jobs in the United States will be available in densely populated areas, especially New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles, and Miami.
As fashion trends change, so too must the way runway shows that are presented. Themes reflect the taste of the fashion consumer—flashy styles translate to loud, heavily choreographed shows; understated clothing may call for softer presentations. One style of show, as seen by a popular Chicago fashion show producer, has no spoken commentary. Instead, messages in words and images are shown on the backdrop. More recently, the company Victoria's Secret produced revolutionary shows that were accessible on the Internet (and were later broadcast on television). By logging on to the company's Web site, the public had a live front-row view to the latest in lingerie fashions. These new and varied types of shows should provide employment opportunities for the creative and hip fashion coordinator.
