Salaries depend on such factors as the location, size, and type of library, the amount of experience the library assistant has, and the responsibilities of the position. The mean annual salary of library assistants was $35,790 in May 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. (The mean annual salary for workers in all careers was $65,470.) Salaries for library assistants ranged from less than $23,510 to $50,200 or more. Fifty percent of library assistants earned between $28,670 and $41,300. On average, assistants working in specialty libraries that require technical knowledge have higher earning potential.
Library assistants who work part time are paid hourly and generally do not receive benefits or paid vacation time. Because of this, many work at other jobs or go to school to advance in the profession. Benefits for full-time workers include vacation and sick time, health, and sometimes dental, insurance, and pension or 401(k) plans.
