Salaries depend on such factors as the location, size, and type of library, the amount of experience the library assistant has, and the responsibilities of the position. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median annual salary of library assistants was $26,499 in May 2018. Salaries ranged from less than $18,803 to $43,430 or more. On average, assistants working in specialty libraries that require technical knowledge have higher earning potential.
Library assistants who work part time are paid hourly and generally do not receive benefits or paid vacation time. Because of this, many work at other jobs or go to school to advance in the profession. Benefits for full-time workers include vacation and sick time, health, and sometimes dental, insurance, and pension or 401(k) plans.
