According to a 2023 Allied Market Research report, the global market for adventure tourism reached $324.9 billion in 2022. Following compound annual growth of 19.5 percent between 2023 and 2032, this figure was projected to reach $2 trillion. Several factors propelled the market, including the desire to see undiscovered locations and partnerships between private companies and government agencies focused on promoting tourism. Geographically, the highest growth was expected to occur in the Asia-Pacific region.

Many trends in today’s society support the continued growth of adventure tourism. One reason is that the public’s awareness of and interest in physical health is growing; this leads more and more people to pursue physical activities as a form of recreation. Another reason is that as more people realize that a healthy environment means a better quality of life, there is an increased interest in wildlife and wilderness issues. Adventure travel often encompasses physical activity and education on preserving natural areas, so it is a natural choice for many travelers.

Despite the general growth in the field, however, it should be noted that jobs as tour guides may take work to come by. Job openings for fieldwork in adventure travel are limited and highly sought after. Compared to the rest of the travel market, the adventure segment is still fairly small. Tour guide positions are considered very desirable.
