Cartographers

Unions and Associations

A large number of associations serve cartographers and related groups, perhaps because the work of cartographers is used by so many organizations, both public and private, commercial and academic. Some of the organizations that serve cartographers are independent member groups of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS). That umbrella organization itself has 7,000 members. Its mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of mapping sciences and to promote the responsible application of photogrammetry and remote sensing, GIS, and their support technologies. ASPRS members represent a wide range of specialties, from agriculture/soils to urban planning and development. Like the National Society of Professional Surveyors, the ASPRS and some of its member organizations have special sections that focus on students and careers in their respective specialties.

Land Surveyors United is a global community of professional surveyors, offering education, news, employment listings, and membership resources. The National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) describes itself as "the voice of the professional surveying community in the United States and its territories." The organization, which works with state surveying societies and maintains communications with other agencies, regulators, and lawmakers, offers a student membership option.
