Library directors are expected to attend workshops, conferences, meetings, and some community events. At times the job can be very stressful, even more so when a director has to juggle multiple projects, face a big deadline, or deal with employees who are not meeting their expectations. Unlike other librarians, directors have little contact with library patrons. This is especially true in libraries with larger staffs.
The majority of library directors enjoy their careers. In fact, 80 percent of library directors who were surveyed by PayScale.com in 2025 reported being “highly satisfied” with their occupational choice.
