Many merchant mariners belong to unions such as American Maritime Officers; International Organization of Masters, Mates, and Pilots; Marine Engineers' Beneficial Association; and Seafarers International Union-Atlantic, Gulf, Lakes and Inland Waters, AFL-CIO. The American Waterways Operators and the International Ship Masters' Association are membership organizations for merchant mariners. The U.S. Coast Guard National Maritime Center provides licensing to merchant mariners. The Maritime Administration is the agency within the U.S. Department of Transportation that deals with waterborne transportation. It is an excellent source of information on the shipping industry.
