Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

The American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers offers the certified bookkeeper credential to candidates who pass a four-part, national certification exam and who sign the institute’s Code of Ethics. Credential seekers or holders must also submit evidence of at least two years of full-time bookkeeping experience or 3,000 hours of part-time or freelance experience before or after they pass the national exam. The National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers and IAAP also offer certification. Accounts payable specialists do not need to be licensed.
