Education and Training Requirements

High School

Recommended high school classes include business, accounting, mathematics, computer science, speech, English, and foreign language.

Postsecondary Education

Some job openings are available to those with just a high school diploma, but candidates with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field will have the best job prospects. Many programs require students to participate in at least one internship to obtain hands-on experience.

Certification

Some colleges and universities offer certificate programs in office administration and technology, accounting, business operations, and related fields. Programs typically last six months to a year and are available in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Contact schools in your area for information about available programs.

IAAP describes itself as a “global nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering administrative professionals for the future of work.” It offers CAPstone, a twice-a-year program that allows applicants to earn a certificate in one or more key areas of the administrative profession. Certificates are available in organizational management, business writing, technology applications, records management, project management, meeting and event planning, and human resources. Visit https://www.iaap-capstone.org for more information.

Other Education or Training

Continuing education seminars, webinars, and other learning opportunities are provided by professional associations (such as IAAP and the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers), colleges and universities, and online, for-profit learning platforms. Contact these organizations for more information.
