Employment of claims adjusters, appraisers, examiners, and investigators is projected to decline by 5 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Automation—such as computer software that can evaluate photographs of damaged property and calculate an estimated claim amount—will reduce the number of adjusters that will be needed in coming years. Artificial intelligence and faster data processing speeds also will make workers more efficient and productive.
Virtually all job growth in this field will be related to employees who change jobs or retire, according to the DOL. However, the growing aging population has increased the need for health insurance claims adjusters and examiners in recent years. The DOL also reports that more claims adjusters could be needed if natural disasters, such as fires and floods, increase.
Job opportunities for auto damage appraisers are expected to experience the strongest decrease (-9%) from 2023 to 2033 as automation gradually reduces jobs in this specialty.
