Sociologists

Unions and Associations

The majority of sociologists are employed as college educators. Unions that represent the interests of college professors include the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. The American Association of University Professors' purpose is "to advance academic freedom and shared governance; to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education; to promote the economic security of faculty, academic professionals, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and all those engaged in teaching and research in higher education; to help the higher education community organize to make our goals a reality; and to ensure higher education's contribution to the common good." The American Sociological Association is the leading professional organization for sociologists. It provides career resources, job listings, publications, continuing education classes and webinars, and other useful resources. The Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology, another popular organization for sociologists, provides certification and continuing education opportunities.
