High School
In high school, take courses in business, accounting, mathematics, and computer science. Accounts receivable specialists must have top-notch oral and written communication skills. Speech, English, writing, and foreign language courses will help you to develop these skills.
Postsecondary Education
You can enter this career with only a high school diploma, but the best job opportunities are available for those with an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related fields. You will also be required to participate in at least one internship or other experiential education opportunity to obtain hands-on experience.
Certification
Some colleges and universities offer certificate programs in office administration and technology, accounting, and related fields. For example, the College of Lake County in Illinois offers a one-year general office expert certificate program. To earn the certificate, students must complete the following courses: English Composition; Advanced Word Processing Using Microsoft Word; Advanced Spreadsheets Using Microsoft Excel; Integrated Application Projects; and Administrative Office Procedures. Programs typically are offered in online, in-person, and hybrid formats. Contact schools in your area to learn more about available programs.
Office professionals who would like to expand their skills can participate in CAPstone, a twice-a-year educational program that is offered by IAAP. The program allows applicants to earn a certificate in one or more key areas of the administrative profession. Certificates are available in business writing, human resources, meeting and event planning, organizational management, project management, records management, and technology applications. Visit https://www.iaap-capstone.org for more information. (IAAP describes itself as a “global nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering administrative professionals for the future of work.”)
Other Education or Training
IAAP offers an Academy for Leadership Development, an online learning portal, and certificate programs. Continuing education opportunities are also provided by the National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers, colleges and universities, and for-profit online learning platforms.
