Employment for all bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks is projected to decline 5 percent from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL). Automation is reducing opportunities for accounts receivable specialists who perform basic tasks, but those who have advanced training and expertise in the use of artificial intelligence technology and other automation tools will have better job prospects.
Although job opportunities are expected to decline for bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks, there are a large number of workers (more than 1.4 million in 2024) in these professions and turnover is high as current workers retire, are promoted, or leave the field for higher-paying jobs. As a result, about 174,900 openings for bookkeeping, accounting, and auditing clerks are projected each year, on average, from 2023 to 2033—which translates into many opportunities for accounts receivable specialists.
