Employment for writers is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all careers from 2023 to 2033, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. But it is important to remember that competition for writing jobs with newspapers, periodicals, book publishers, and nonprofit organizations is expected to be intense. Beginners, especially, may have difficulty finding employment. Of the thousands who graduate each year with degrees in English, journalism, communications, and the liberal arts, intending to establish a career as a writer, many turn to other occupations when they find that applicants far outnumber the job openings available. College students would do well to keep this in mind and prepare for a related alternate career in areas such as nutrition or physical education in the event they cannot obtain a position as a diet or fitness writer.
The continued growth of online publishing will provide demand for writers; those with social media skills will have an advantage as a result.
