Household Movers

Certification, Licensing, and Special Requirements

Certification or Licensing

There are no certification programs available for individual movers. The Moving & Storage Conference offers the ProMover certification program to moving companies that meet certain requirements. Visit https://www.trucking.org/promover for more information. The owners of moving companies must be licensed by the state or other government entity that oversees the geographic area where they do business.

Other Requirements

An appropriate driver's license, usually a commercial driving permit, is required. In addition, independent operators may need to get operating permission from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the U.S. Department of Transportation to transport furniture and other goods across state lines.

In most cases, movers must be at least 21 years old in order to work on interstate moves. In fact, individual moving firms may require their employees to be over 25 for insurance purposes.
