Household Workers

Those who enjoy housework and home repairs are likely to be successful household workers. One way to explore your interest in and enjoyment of this work is to get a part-time or summer job in this area. Although you may not immediately find employment in a private household, hotels and resorts frequently have positions available in cleaning, laundry, or even child care. During the summer you may find business mowing people's lawns or caring for homes while owners are away on vacation. Another possibility is to do miscellaneous household and repair work for elderly people in your community who may want help with such tasks. Churches, synagogues, other religious organizations, or local employment offices may provide information on people looking for such help. Housekeeping, laundry, and kitchen opportunities may also be available on a summer or part-time basis at local nursing homes or hospitals. Volunteer opportunities also exist for those interested in being companions to persons needing personal assistance.

Talk with a household worker about his or her career. Ask your school counselor to help arrange an interview. Suggested interview questions include: What made you want to enter this career? What are your favorite and least favorite aspects of your job? How did you train for this field? What are the most important skills for career success? What advice would you give to young people about preparing for the field and being successful on the job? Perhaps you could even job-shadow a nanny, butler, or other household worker to learn even more about the field.
