Robert Prince established the Prince Nursery in Flushing, New York, in 1737. It was the first commercial plant nursery in the United States. The nursery was so popular that it was even visited by President George Washington in 1789. During its approximately 150-year operation, it was known as one of the top nurseries in the United States.
The American Nursery & Landscape Association (ANLA), a trade association of the nursery and landscape industry, was founded in 1876. In 2014 it became part of a new organization named AmericanHort, which was formed through the consolidation of ANLA and OFA—The Association of Horticultural Professionals. It offers more than 224 years of combined experience to the plant and horticulture services industry.
Today, commercial nurseries, greenhouses, and garden centers, both small and large, can be found throughout the United States.
