Any experience working in the advertising industry, as well as the completion of at least one college internship, will be useful for aspiring account executives.

While account executives do not need to have the same degree of artistic skill or knowledge as art directors or graphic designers, they must be imaginative and understand the communication methods of art, photography, video, and print and digital media in order to direct the overall progress of an ad campaign. They should also be able to work under pressure, motivate employees, solve problems, and demonstrate flexibility, good judgment, decisiveness, and patience.

Account executives must be aware of trends and be interested in the business climate and the psychology of making purchases. In addition, they should be able to write clearly, make effective presentations, and communicate persuasively. It is also helpful to stay abreast of the various software programs used in advertising design and management. This career generally requires long hours and frequent travel to visit clients, so being flexible in terms of time and commitment is key.

Account executives in advertising must be able to anticipate obstacles and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines. It is essential to address clients' concerns, issues, and feedback and deliver completed projects on time.

Successful advertising account executives must have strong interpersonal skills to connect and engage with diverse personalities, including clients and creatives. Employers look for professionals who possess exceptional communication and presentation abilities, creativity, and an in-depth understanding of the advertising industry and current trends.

Hiring managers seek executives with bachelor's degrees in advertising, business, marketing, or a related field. Mid-level positions prefer one to three years of marketing or advertising experience. People who have previously worked as account planners or coordinators may receive a higher salary than advertising account executives. It is a common requirement for jobs to expect proficiency in using Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office.
