Aerobics Instructors and Fitness Trainers

Exploring This Job

A visit to a health club, park district, or YMCA aerobics class is a good way to observe the work of fitness trainers and aerobics instructors. Part-time or summer jobs are sometimes available for high school students in these facilities. Volunteering in a senior citizen center where aerobics classes are offered may also be possible. Enroll in an aerobics class or train with a fitness trainer to experience firsthand what their jobs entail and to see what makes a good instructor.

Aerobics instructor workshops are taught to help prospective instructors gain experience. These are usually offered in adult education courses at such places as the YMCA. Unpaid apprenticeships are also a good way for future instructors to obtain supervised experience before teaching classes independently. The facility may allow prospective aerobics instructors to take their training classes for free if they work there.

Opportunities for student fitness trainers are available in schools with fitness trainers on staff. This is an excellent way for students to continuously observe and assist a professional fitness trainer.
