Fashion Stylists

The value of a good fashion stylist is becoming more and more apparent to photographers and advertising clients. However, the outlook for employment for stylists depends a great deal on their perseverance and reputation. Larger cities are the most fertile places to find work, but there are photo studios in nearly every community. The fortunes of the stylist are intrinsically related to the health of the fashion, advertising, film, video, and commercial photography industries. When these industries are growing, there will be a steady need for fashion stylists. When growth slows in these industries, demand will slow for styling professionals. Stylists should try to maintain a wide client base if possible, so they can be assured of regular work in case one source dries up.

Technological advances—especially in the areas of digital photography, photo enhancement, and generative artificial intelligence—may transform, but not eliminate, the role of the fashion stylist in the future. Someday there may be educational avenues for the stylist to enter into the field, and this may increase the amount of competition for styling assignments. Ultimately, though, maintaining the quality of work is the best insurance for continued employment.
