Interior Designers and Decorators

Overview

Interior designers and interior decorators evaluate, plan, and design the interior areas of residential, commercial, and industrial structures. In addition to helping clients select equipment and fixtures, these professionals supervise the coordination of colors and materials, obtain estimates and costs within the client's budget, and oversee the execution and installation of the project. They also often advise clients on architectural requirements, space planning, and the function and purpose of the environment.

There are approximately 75,400 interior designers working in the United States. They are employed by interior design or architectural firms, department stores, furniture stores, hotel chains, and large corporations.
