Smart Building Systems Designers

Overview

A smart, or intelligent, building is one that uses sensors, cameras, data analytics, artificial intelligence, automated systems, and integrated processes to self-regulate its environment and operations. The construction of smart buildings—as well as the retrofitting of existing structures—reduces energy costs and usage; improves safety (for example, a smart building can automatically detect smoke and signal a fire alarm); allows building owners to identify maintenance or other performance issues with lighting, heating/cooling, and other systems before they stop working; improves the comfort of workers, as well as their performance (in some instances); and can even increase the value of the property. A smart building can be anything from a house or apartment building, to a school, university building, corporate headquarters, mall, or retail store. Smart building systems designers are engineers, industrial designers, architects, and others who design systems and technologies for smart buildings. They are also known as intelligent building systems designers.
