Smart Building Systems Designers

Work Environment

Smart building systems designers enjoy an intellectually rewarding work environment in which they get the opportunity to use their creativity, imagination, and analytical skills to make existing buildings smarter or design the systems and technologies for brand-new smart buildings. Most designers work in pleasant offices and have access to cutting-edge technology. They work a standard 40-hour week Monday through Friday, but may need to work at night and on weekends to meet deadlines. Smart building systems designers travel to job sites (existing buildings that will be retrofitted with smart technology or new construction sites). Self-employed designers—especially those who are new to the industry—often work more than 50 hours a week in order to build their business and attract clients.
