The International Society of Automation defines automation as “the creation and application of technology to monitor and control the production and delivery of products or services.” Building automation systems technicians install, maintain, and repair building automation systems, which contain centralized controls that operate a building’s heating, air-conditioning, electrical, lighting, plumbing and water heating, elevator, security (including surveillance cameras), fire alarm, sprinkler, ventilation/air purification, and other systems. A building automation system (BAS) is often used with some type of smart metering or energy management software, and the most modern systems incorporate artificial intelligence and the Industrial Internet of Things. Building automation systems technicians also are known as automation technicians, building automation technicians, and building controls technicians.
